I had both of these photos in my archive, and I thought it was fun to put them side-by-side as a comparison. On the left, my 1989 Sabre 42 keel/centerboard. On the right, our current 38 MKII with the deep keel.

Firstly, I have to say that the side by side picture of these two boats is just breath taking! Then, to quickly add this: The comparison of the deep keel and the shallow keel/ center board speaks for itself. Side slip control and upwind performance belong to the deep keel…. Clearly. But I type “shallow keel/center board for a purpose: Some of us know about a center board yacht with no shallow keel, just a center board dropping out of a deep, rounded hull form:
